Don Shula Foundation, Inc.
Dedicated to Breast Cancer Research

Coach Don Shula is widely known as the winningest Coach in NFL history, but he is also known for an even greater accomplishment, the establishment of the Don Shula Foundation. Coach Shula's wife, Dorothy, fought breast cancer for six years. Just before her death, Coach Shula formed the Foundationfor the purpose of finding a cure for breast cancer. On behalf of the Foundation, Don and Mary Anne Shula have chaired various fund-raising activities for the purpose of raising awareness about breast cancer and raising funds for finding a cure.

This year, approximately 200,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease, according to the Breast Cancer Coalition. Breast cancer currently afflicts one in nine women, a 33% increase from the past decade. The key to eradicating breast
cancer will be found through basic and clinical research. This is the focus of the Don Shula Foundation's efforts.

To date, the Foundation has raised over one million dollars to help fund the endowment for this vital research. The Shula Foundation annually allocates grants to the top breast cancer research institutions in the country.

Camp Boggy Creek

Where the catch of the day is the joy of a lifetime!

Camp Boggy Creek is a permanent, year-round facility where young people between the ages of 7-16 with chronic and life-threatening illnesses can come at no charge to them or their families. The majority of the cost of staffing and operating the camp is covered by contributions from individuals, healthcare partnerships, foundations and corporations.

Camp Boggy Creek camping experience is more than a fun- filled getaway. It helps children to better cope with the day-to-day challenges they face.
It also offers critical support to the parents, guardians and siblings of these amazing campers. Located on 232 acres of beautiful wooded land, it has 44 cracker style buildings including 16 camper cabins, dining hall, medical center, swim center, stable, little farm, sports and recreation center, arts and crafts building, creative center and theater.

Boggy Creek programs include week long summer sessions as well as family weekends in the fall and spring. Summer programs allow the child a week of fun, adventure and independence in a setting that provides complete medical care. Family weekends bring a camper's whole family to camp where parents can relax and find needed support among other families dealing with identical emotional and financial challenges. Brothers and sisters get to participate in the same fun-filled activities as their Boggy Creek camper.

Characters Spread Disney Magic at Camp Boggy Creek

Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto recently made dreams a reality for critically and chronically ill children at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Fla. For the fifth consecutive summer, Disney characters have visited the facility every week to surprise campers for breakfast, music, dancing, and photo opportunities. "It's astonishing to see the children's faces when the characters arrive because it's so unexpected and it's just for them," said Sarah Gurtis, Camp Boggy Creek vice president of marketing & corporate development. Big Brothers Big Sisters

With the World Sailfish Championship's emphasis on helping children, it comes as no surprise that one of the beneficiary charities is the Key West chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Covering nearly 100 miles of islands from Key West to Key Largo, Big Brothers/Big Sisters focuses most of its energy on two courses of action: matching big brother and sisters with youngsters ages 6 to 16 needing their time and guidance; and a mentoring program that enables senior high school and community college students to help younger students in their classroom.

The Rotary Club of Key West

The Rotary Club of Key West was chartered in 1916. To say the Rotary Club of Key West aims to help children is to understate the extent of their service.

"We're a collection of business people in the community who are committed to community service and, in particular, children and young people," says rotarian George Galvan. "When Chris King mentioned that a stipulation for us as a beneficiary would be to put the proceeds to something for children, we didn't have to look too far. Most of what we do involves children."
